Maintenance and Repair of Fireplace Inserts
The service crew at Sierra Hearth & Home provides annual maintenance, service, and repair for wood, gas, and pellet fireplace inserts.
Be sure to read your owner’s manual and follow the manufacturer’s requirements for keeping your insert clean and safe.
DID YOU KNOW?
When burned properly, a new, high-efficiency wood or pellet insert will generate much less ash and creosote than traditional appliances. This means less work for you!
Like a new car, your new insert will need some care to keep it looking good and performing at optimum levels. The level of maintenance required will depend on the fuel type you’ve chosen. Most of the basic maintenance is easy to do and takes just a few minutes. A thorough cleaning and inspection of the insert and chimney should be done on every unit at the end of each season so it’s ready to go in the fall. For annual service or more in-depth maintenance, call us at Sierra Hearth & Home and have our technicians take care of it for you.
WOOD
- Clean the ash every 1-2 weeks. Your wood insert will work better if you leave 1-2 inches of ash on the bricks at all times.
- Clean the glass as needed.
- Clean the fan once or twice a season, as needed. Clean the dust and fuzz off the blades to keep the fan running smoothly and quietly.
- Clean the chimney liner and cap at the end or beginning of each season to remove creosote and to ensure that birds or squirrels haven’t created a blockage in the pipe.
- Check the door gasket every year. You can expect to replace it every 3-5 years.
- Check the glass gasket every year. Because glass gasket doesn’t get the same wear as door gasket you can replace it much less often.
- Check the bricks and air tubes. These only need to be replaced when worn out. They are designed for long life so you won’t need to replace them often.
PELLET
- Clean the heat exchange tubes. Use the built-in scraper every time you load your hopper.
- Clean the inside of the burn area every 1-2 weeks. You need to clean the heat exchange tubes, burn pot, fire back and ash pan.
- Clean the glass as needed.
- Clean the fan once or twice a season, as needed.
- Clean the chimney liner and cap, usually once a season.
- Check the door gasket every year. You can expect to replace it every 3-5 years.
- Check the glass gasket every year. Because glass gasket doesn’t get the same wear as door gasket you can replace it much less often.
GAS
- Clean the fan once or twice a season, as needed.
- Clean the glass at the end of the season.
- Check glass gasket at the end of the season.
- Check cap and clean out spider webs or other blockages.
- Check the burner assembly once a year. This is best done by one of our technicians.
- Change the batteries in your thermostat or remote once a year.
